Wardriving Remember the 1980's movie "Wargames" with Matthew Broderick. This movie helped coin a term called "WarDialing." WarDialing is method where a hacker programs his computer to dial random phone numbers so he can find, and then hack into, computer systems. Those were the good old days of dial up. Now fast-forward to today: we have wireless networking. And a hot new trend occurring within certain hacker circles is the practice of driving around in a car or van searching for wireless Internet connections to log onto. This is known as "WarDriving." Using widely available and inexpensive Wi-Fi scouting systems they look for wireless LAN signals that they can connect to and exploit. Often their intent is to connect anonymously to the Internet and do bad things like: spread computer viruses, conduct spam emailings, hack into the Pentagon or CitiBank, send/receive child porn, etc. Hard-core wardrivers even mark the hotspots they find with special coded marks using chalk, markers or spray paint. This is called "Warchalking."
These "free" Internet connections may be used to do criminal things. Imagine someone logging onto your wireless LAN and then hacking into the CIA or the Bank of America.
